Tell Gov. Nixon to Raise the Standard of Care for Rape Victims!
Did you know that 54% of Missouri Emergency Rooms do NOT offer emergency contraception to rape victims? While many believe prescription or referral systems are adequate for rape and sexual assault victims, we disagree. By the time a survivor or rape or sexual assault arrives at the hospital she will often be going through the crisis stage. It is unreasonable to ask a woman in this condition to go out in search of her own EC. One SANE Nurse (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner), who pioneered her hospital’s effort to create a policy to offer EC onsite in her hospital put it this way, “Our belief is that victims of sexual assault have been through enough without the added stress of having to go to the pharmacy to obtain this med. The less they have to run around town, the better. Our goal is to have everything taken care of before they leave our care, so they can begin the healing process at home as soon as possible. It’s a long and hard road anyways, and whatever we can do to relieve some of the tension is worth the effort of endless committees and paperwork.” Tell Governor Nixon that MO women deserve better!
