Pro-Choice Victory: Personhood Amendment Defeated!
Thank you, Pro-Choice Missouri! By not allowing the "personhood" movement to gather enough signatures for their outrageous constitutional amendment proposal, you have kept abortion and contraception access safe in our state. A group that calls themselves Personhood Missouri has been attempting to collect Missouri voters' signatures since January. If they had collected the 150,000 needed to get on the ballot, Missouri voters would have had to consider a constitutional amendment in November. The language of this proposed constitutional amendment would redefine "person" to mean, "a human being from the beginning of biological development." If this amendment were enacted, women's access to legal abortion would be in serious danger, as would their access to safe contraceptive methods like emergency contraception. Clearly, "personhood" provisions are much too extreme for Missourians. Voters in Missouri value privacy and each person's ability to make their own health decisions. Anti-choice tactics like this one would make drastic, unnecessary changes to current law. Pro-choice and pro-privacy Missourians wisely rejected this proposal and will do it again should any more outrageous attacks on women's health surface.
