Pro-Choice Reactions to the Anniversary of Dr. Tiller's Murder

Modified: 06/01/2010

"Trust Women" - Dr. George Tiller

On the anniversary of Dr. Tiller's murder, many Pro-Choice Americans speak out about what his work meant to them. Dr. Tiller "was kind, soft-spoken and caring" according to a patient of his who went to him in desperation at her time of need. He was not there to judge, simply to respect.

Amelia Thomson-DeVeaux, in her article about the anniversary of the murder, states that the event has helped to bring the pro-choice community together in support of the work that Tiller fought for so diligently. Although this past year has been full of proposed legislation that will limit women's rights to control their bodies, Thomson-DeVeaux believes that pro-choice citizens are now more willing to make a stand.

The Planned Parenthood Federation of America states that "There is simply no place in civil society for this outrageous and frightening intimidation." Yes, Tiller's work was controversial and many people did not agree with it. It was also courageous as despite all the intimidation from those who did not support him, Tiller remained committed to trusting women and giving them a choice.

David Klepper, in an article regarding the anniversary, reminds us that the debate sparked a year ago by this murder is far from over. He also encourages us to not forget the other side of the argument. Klepper reminds pro-choice citizens of the importance of staying informed on current legislation that would keep other doctors like George Tiller from helping women have complete control over their reproductive freedom.
