Abortion Foes Making Huge Strides at State Level
"At least 11 states have passed laws this year regulating or restricting abortion, giving opponents of abortion what partisans on both sides of the issue say is an unusually high number of victories." - The New York Times Spurred predominantly by a debate on fetal pain, many Anti-Choice lawmakers have jumped at the chance to enact new state legislation that restricts women's reproductive freedom. New legislation that has appeared this year in various states includes: mandatory ultrasounds, limited or no coverage of abortion procedures by insurance, mandatory counseling prior to procedures, and one that forbids Oklahoma families from suing doctors who do not reveal fetal abnormailities prior to birth. New legislation has also been introduced in Nebraska by State Senator Mike Flood in hopes of thwarting the efforts of Dr. LeRoy Carhart, the man who was planning on continuing the work of Dr. George Tiller. Many Pro-Choice organizations are fighting this new surge of legislation and are hoping to take some issues to the supreme court where the opinions of two justices have still been untested regarding their views on reproductive rights.
