Great News About Access To EC!
Your emails and letters to the FDA panel really made a difference and we're one step closer to a landmark victory for women's access to reproductive health care.
On Tuesday, November 18, 2003, a U.S. advisory panel voted to recommend that the Food and Drug Administration make Plan B (emergency contraception, EC or the "morning after pill") available without a prescription. The final decision will be made by the Food and Drug Administration; however, the FDA usually follows the advice of its advisory panels.
The vote by the panel was 23-4, showing overwhelming support for the right of women to more easily access this safe and effective means of contraception. Increasing access to EC will certainly help us to achieve the goal of lowering the number of unwanted pregnancies and abortions in this state and across the country.
A decision by the FDA is expected in February.
