NARAL PRO-CHOICE MISSOURI URGES PRESIDENT BUSH TO CONSULT, NOT CONFRONT, IN NOMINATION OF NEXT SUPREME COURT JUSTICE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 1, 2005
Pro-choice Missourians mobilize in support of a moderate consensus nominee.
(St. Louis, MO) – NARAL Pro-Choice MO, the state's largest grassroots organization dedicated solely to reproductive rights, issued the following statement in response to Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s announcement that she will retire from the Supreme Court.
"The President has the opportunity to say 'Read my Lips.' He's got a chance to keep the promise to be 'a uniter, not a divider' he made when he was running in 2000,” said Pamela Sumners, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri. “He can honor that promise, and honor his duty to seek advice and consent of the Senate, by nominating a mainstream thinker instead of an ideologue. A centrist appointment would be worthy of Justice O'Connor's legacy. It would also keep faith with senatorial leaders who promised not to filibuster nominees if the president not send extremist nominees forward as he did when he sent Bill Pryor, Patricia Owen, and Janice Rogers Rogers Brown to the Senate for courts of appeals slots."
As part of its “Choose Justice” campaign, NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri will activate a network of grassroots activists across Missouri who will conduct petition drives, contact their lawmakers, distribute flyers and information on the significance of a Supreme Court vacancy and the need for a moderate justice who respects this country’s long tradition of personal freedom and personal responsibility. They will urge President Bush to consult with both parties and nominate a justice who understands the profound impact his or her decisions will have on the lives of everyday Americans.
