NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri Protests Chancellor’s Anti-Condom Policy
St. Louis, MO - “NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri calls on University of Missouri – Columbia Chancellor Brady Deaton to end his proscription on condom distribution in on-campus residence halls. Access to prevention is a proven means of combating unintended pregnancies, which leads to a lower abortion rate, and a lower rate of sexually transmitted diseases. Condom distribution is a cost-effective way to promote sexual health and personal responsibility. Commonsense, science-based health policy must be the standard by which this plan is evaluated; health policy must not be driven by political ideology,” said NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri executive director Pamela Sumners.
The organization sent a letter to Chancellor Deaton asking him to reconsider his decision to veto condom distribution in residence halls. The Phi Beta Sigma fraternity was scheduled to distribute the condoms in residence halls on the campus, but the Chancellor forbid it.
Since 1969 NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri has served as the political arm of the pro-choice movement in Missouri. The mission of NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri is to develop and sustain a constituency that uses the political process to guarantee every women the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive options, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.
