NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri Activists Say “PUT PREVENTION FIRST”, Deliver Thousands of Petition Signatures to Governor, Senators

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                           May 8th, 2007

NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri Activists Say “PUT PREVENTION FIRST”, Deliver Thousands of Petition Signatures to Governor, Senators

(Jefferson City, MO)  On Tuesday, May 8th, activists from NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri, the state’s largest grassroots organization dedicated solely to protecting reproductive rights through the political process, converged on the state capitol in Jefferson City to deliver thousands of petition signatures and the message: “Put Prevention First” to Governor Matt Blunt and members of the Missouri Senate.

The trip was part of a larger “Prevention not Restrictions” campaign being conducted by NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri to stop HB1055—a dangerous attempt by anti-choice hardliners to close clinics and eliminate requirements that Missouri public school sex-education programs teach factual, medically accurate information about birth control and disease prevention.  Over the final two weeks of session, NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri will be encouraging tens of thousands of NARAL Pro-Choice Missouri members and pro-choice voters all across the state to contact their state senators via telephone and email campaigns.

Instead of making abortion more dangerous and kicking qualified sex-education instructors out of schools, NARAL members urged the governor and members of the Missouri Senate and House to focus on policies that would help Missouri women prevent unintended pregnancies, such as better access to birth control, including emergency contraception.
