Abortion Ban Initiative Submitted to Secretary of State
Radical Anti-Choice Group Submits Petition for Statewide Abortion Ban For Immediate Release: For more info contact: November 29, 2007 Pamela Sumners at 314-531-8616 Petition language has been submitted to the Missouri Secretary of State’s office that would place a near-total abortion ban on the statewide ballot next November. The petition, submitted by anti-choice special interest group the Elliot Institute, would ban all abortions not deemed to be necessary to save the life or to prevent irreversible organ failure of the pregnant woman. It contains no exception for victims of rape or incest. It also requires that a dying woman seeking the abortion that is necessary to save her life be subjected to a 48-hour period of “reflection time” before receiving critically needed medical care. “What we see here is an attempt to send Missouri back to flat-earth politics,” said Executive Director Pamela Sumners. “Everyone who cares about women knows that banning abortion does not stop abortion. It merely sends our mothers, sisters, and daughters into dangerous back alleys where they went before Roe v. Wade. This petition is only in its initial stages, and we will see that it is defeated.” ###
